Young Carers Action Day – 11th March

Yound Carers Action Day is an annual UK‑wide awareness event which highlights the challenges young carers face and to campaign for better support. The event focuses on ensuring young carers have equal opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive, as a whopping 800,000 children between 5-17 years old are carers in the UK. The hope in 2026 is that together we will highlight the support young carers need to reach their potential, from recognition in school and access to training and employment, to meaningful breaks, wellbeing support and opportunities that help them build brighter futures.

No Smoking Day

Wednesday the 11th March is ‘No Smoking Day’ – A day originally launched by the charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH). As we know from experience within the ambulance service, a large majority of jobs we attend such as COPD exacerbations, heart attacks and cardiac arrests, are very likely a knock on effect of long term smoking. This includes the reliance on smoking ourselves due to the pressures of working in a high intensity job.  So alongside the benefits for the pressures on the ambulance service, ‘No Smoking Day’ is also an encouraging day to raise awareness of the immediate and long-term health improvements that come from quitting—more energy, better breathing, reduced risk of serious illness, and not forgetting the benefits for loved ones by reducing second-hand smoke exposure.

So where do we start? – Well, the NHS’ ‘Power to Quit Smoking’ campaign is now live! This involves a tonne of useful resources including the NHS Quit Smoking app and the Personal Quit Plan (PQP) to help get you going! You’ll find daily motivation, progress tracking, craving support, practical tips, helps identifying triggers and so much more to help you on your journey. There’s also a collection of digital resources available to use if you wish to signpost patients and others, and actively aid in encouraging the beginning of their quitting journey.
